Delta Electronics EMEA, a prominent leader in the region, recently concluded its exclusive employee-only CSR initiative, known as the 'Charity Fitness Challenges.' Taking place from September 15 to October 6, 2023, this initiative was designed to contribute to the restoration of the Leiria Pine Forest in Portugal, which had suffered devastating forest fires. For every 10 kilometers covered by our colleagues through walking, biking, or any form of exercise, and for every hour recorded, Delta pledged to donate one tree to the forest.
In 2017, the Leiria Pine Forest endured a challenging 24 hours, leaving only a mere 1,500 hectares still standing today. Alongside the charred trees, 700 years of history and the very future of this forest vanished. Between January and October of that fateful year, Portugal suffered a staggering loss of 418,000 hectares of forest and woodlands. Before the devastating wildfire of 2017, this forest stood as a majestic testament to nature, featuring ancient pine trees and providing a haven for outdoor enthusiasts engaged in activities like hiking, cycling, and picnicking. Following the tremendous forest fires in Southern Europe this summer, we have decided to dedicate our efforts to help, as the area is now primed for rejuvenation.
The premise of the initiative was simple yet impactful. For every 10 kilometers covered by walking, biking, hiking, etc., or for every recorded hour of exercise, Delta pledged to donate one tree. Over the span of three weeks, more than 210 EMEA colleagues joined the initiative. Our colleagues successfully covered 11,600 kilometers and exercised for an additional 79 hours, resulting in 1,230 trees to be planted. Inspired by our colleagues' dedication, Delta EMEA has rounded up the number and will be donating 1,500 trees to this region.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the employees who wholeheartedly embraced the Charity Fitness Challenges, contributing to bringing greenery back to the Leiria Pine Forest.
